- Grade 2 listed building full of character.
- Superb setting being quiet yet convenient.
- Two highly popular holiday lets.
Location Leave Ambleside northwards on the A591 passing by both Rydal Water and Grasmere Lake and continuing north and straight on at the mini roundabout at Grasmere and take the right turning immediately after Our Lady of Wayside Catholic Church beside Benfield before reaching The Swan Inn. Follow the lane and after it bends to the left, the cottages are found on the right hand side behind a high hedge. There is car parking off the road to the left of the cottages, in front of the gate marked Swain Intake, taking care not to obstruct the access to the woodland beyond.
Description Previously known as Forest Side Cottage, this highly attractive Lakeland property was originally the smithy and ostler’s home associated with The Swan Hotel, which at that time was a horse-changing stage, and dates back to around 1704, judging by the beautiful bread or court cupboard in the hallway which carries that date and the entry in the listing by Historic England. Steeped in history and full of character, it is easy to let your imagination run away with thoughts of how life here must have been over three hundred years ago – a life which without doubt would not have stretched to relaxing in the lovely hot bath whilst gazing out at the view, but things move on. Today the main portion of this delightful property is known as Fir Tree Cottage, and is a highly popular holiday let, as is the former Dove Cot in the rear garden which has been converted to add a unique and really romantic 1 bedroomed detached cottage. This combination offers superbly adaptable accommodation, perfect for holiday letting the two portions independently (or to extended families), as the current owner does, ideal for those who might be seeking welcoming home with a ready made income, or for those who might wish to re-locate to this wonderful part of the world, it may be considered that the detached and very private Dove Cot would further adapt to become a splendid home office, independent from the family home.
Fir Tree Cottage is full of authentic Lakeland character, from the 1704 court cupboard in the hall, to the exposed beams and stone floors all combining to create a wonderfully welcoming ambience. The accommodation includes two lovely reception rooms, a breakfast kitchen, splendid pantry/store, three double bedrooms and two bathrooms. All stylishly presented in a manner entirely in keeping with a property of this distinction.
Dovecot is privately placed at the rear and incorporates the original dove cot gable peak as a delightful first floor window and offers a truly unique experience, perfect as a bolt hole, holiday let or even a home office with a living room and kitchen on the ground floor with a bedroom and bathroom above.
The views and the gardens are both delightful and you can stroll from the doorstep to The Swan Inn (as the ostler must have done in years gone by), down to the lake shore or up onto any of the many beautiful fells which surround this world famous village, renown for its connections with William Wordsworth and the romantic poets. Who knows, it is not inconceivable that Mr Wordsworth and his friends may even have supped ale with an ostler at The Swan Inn all those years ago!
